American Moor
Taking back Shakespeare’s great, black leading man.

As an African-American actor auditions for Othello he is met with four hundred years of prejudice, racism and privilege while negotiating with a young, white director who presumes to understand, and ultimately dictate, how to portray the character. American Moor challenges the capacity of theatre to fulfill the human longing to be fully visible and embraced; it’s a powerful show that poses the question “who gets to perform Shakespeare?” while exploring the inequities of life as a black actor and life as a black man. Keith Hamilton Cobb’s stunning, tour-de-force solo performance returns to Boston after its award-winning 2017 run.
"A deep-from-the-heart spellbinder [that] is a blisteringly eloquent and penetrating meditation on the ever-urgent matter of race in America."
– The Boston Globe
