Hang Time

Program Book

OCT 09 — 12, 2025

Jackie Liebergott Black Box Theatre, Emerson Paramount Center

In an effort to reduce paper waste, we have stopped printing full show programs. Instead, we’ve created a small printed piece with the essentials that all audiences receive which then links to a complete digital program.

Dearest ArtsEmerson Friends,

Written and directed by Pulitzer Prize finalist Zora Howard, HANG TIME is a poetic and intergenerational exploration of what it means to be a Black man in America. Anchored by a powerful script, incredible performances, and a set that lives at the intersection of installation and theater, this is a uniquely powerful piece of theatre that we are proud to have on our stage. Given Boston’s particular legacy of racism and the challenges still faced by Black men today, my hope is that this work will catalyze personal reflection and critical conversation, and resonate with you, the audience, for years to come.

I would like to offer my gratitude to Zora Howard for entrusting us with her vision and for the producing team at The Flea for bringing this piece to Boston. I am a huge fan of The Flea, a theatre company at the forefront of incubating new work that centers Black, Brown, and Queer artists, and I look forward to continuing to build on our growing partnership. Deep appreciation as well to our patrons, particularly our supporters of the Gaining Ground Fund–which supports artists and work like HANG TIME, whose storytelling reflects the African Diasporic experience in America. Your support is how these stories are heard, and we thank you.

As has been the case for the last 15 years, ArtsEmerson is committed to presenting work that represents the rich diversity of this city and deepens our connection to each other. Whether you are just joining us this season, or have been with us from the beginning, we are excited to have you and welcome you into our community.

Sincerely,

Ronee Penoi Signature
