The eigth annual Baltic Film Festival in Boston will present three days of the latest award-winning films from Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania. World-class feature films and documentaries for all generations offer a unique opportunity to get to know the Baltic soul – creative, reflective, and rebellious. Organized by The Baltic Film Committee, in collaboration with ArtsEmerson.

As a result of another fight with his abusive father, Paul (13) runs away to stay with his uncle in an unfamiliar town. Paul finds companions in a local youth gang led by one troublemaker Jasper (14), sending Paul to a downward spiral. As Paul meets an odd disabled man Fränk, a peculiar friendship starts to develop between the two, one which Paul is reluctant to admit to the gang. Their friendship turns into the driving force to an almost tragic conflict between two broken boys from similar families.

The Opening Night Reception will follow the screening at 9:00pm.

In 2015, filmmaker Ivars Seleckis began his work on the documentary “To Be Continued” following five Latvian children in their first year of school. Seven years later directors Ivars Seleckis and Armands Začs revisit the protagonists who are now 14 years old. Some have grown up during these seven years, some seem to be still lingering in childhood. While for Zane the only duty at home is to tidy up her room, Anastasia has to take her little brother to the kindergarten and take care of the livestock. While Kārlis gives mother to check his homework every evening and Gleb’s parents plan his daily routine hour by hour, Anete is allowed to live alone in the Riga apartment for a whole week.

When you think positively, the universe responds. This gentle, feel-good coming-of-age dramedy for 30-somethings follows Liv, a passionate woman struggling with body insecurities. Once, Liv dreamed of being a Barbie and still hopes her loving, somewhat old-fashioned husband finds her irresistible, even if their kisses are few and far between. Everything changes when Liv receives a sudden call: her estranged father is in a coma and undergoing intensive therapy. Her awkward, cynical mother remains stuck in the past with rigid rules and sees the stroke as a random attempt to escape. Liv wants to speak to her father, but each visit leaves her lost in the maze-like corridors of the brutalist hospital.

Ilona, a perfectionist 29-year-old, lives in present-day Vilnius, Lithuania. At this turning point in her life, she begins to question how she truly wants to live. She moves into a seemingly perfect apartment with her boyfriend Matas, with whom things are getting serious. But as the building’s renovation begins, Ilona’s inner doubts also start to surface. She strikes up an unexpected friendship with Oleg, a Ukrainian construction worker. Renovation’s director Gabrielė Urbonaitė earned her BFA in Film from Emerson College.
