George Orwell was one of the most visionary authors of the 20th Century, whose novels, 1984 and Animal Farm, foretold a chilling, authoritarian future. Acclaimed director Raoul Peck (I Am Not Your Negro) interweaves clips, readings from Orwell’s diary, cinematic references, and modern-day footage to craft not only a portrait of the writer, but a fresh take on how prophetic his work has become.

Raoul Peck, Director

Raoul Peck is a renowned Haitian filmmaker, writer, and political activist known for his powerful documentaries and features that tackle colonialism, capitalism, and social justice, including I Am Not Your Negro, The Young Karl Marx, and Lumumba, having served as Haiti’s Minister of Culture and receiving numerous accolades, including an Oscar nomination and the Human Rights Watch Irene Diamond Award for his lifetime body of work. Born in Haiti, he grew up in the Congo, Germany, and the U.S., studying engineering and then filmmaking in Berlin, which shaped his multicultural perspective and global career.

Erin Trahan, Arts Journalist & Filmmaker; Moderator

Erin Trahan is an arts journalist and documentary filmmaker. For the last two decades she has reported on independent film for outlets such as 90.9 WBUR and The Boston Globe. She recently released her first short documentary, “Dukakis: Recipe for Democracy,” and was named a Top Ten Emerging Artist by Art New England Magazine. She has been teaching in Emerson’s Journalism and Film, Television, and Media Arts departments since 2016.

Sabrina Aviles, Executive Director, CineFest Latino Boston

Sabrina Avilés is an award-winning independent filmmaker, educator, and the Founder/Executive Director of CineFest Latino Boston. In 2023, she was awarded the prestigious Brother Thomas Fellowship, and in 2019, she was named a LEF Flaherty Fellow.

Her credits include a short documentary called “Raising the Floor” about a basic income pilot implemented in Chelsea, MA during the pandemic. She is currently working on a feature-length documentary about Chelsea, Massachusetts, which delves into the city’s challenges and resilience through the stories of three local leaders.

In 2022, Sabrina founded CineFest Latino Boston after serving as the Executive Director of the Boston Latino International Film Festival for six years. During her tenure, the festival received a special commendation from the Boston Society of Film Critics, “for bringing to Boston audiences a varied, challenging line-up of local, national and international films by Latinx filmmakers, and for prioritizing outreach to community partners.”

In 2024, Boston Magazine voted CineFest Latino Boston the best festival to present international films.

Shared Stories is a spring film series that seeks to build community, shared conversation, and experiences through cinema. This series aspires to create a shared space to find commonality across experiences, and encourage the exchange of stories and ideas. Presented by ArtsEmerson in collaboration with the Boston Asian American Film Festival (BAAFF), CineFest Latino Boston, and the Roxbury International Film Festival (RoxFilm).

New England’s Largest Asian American Film Festival
The Boston Asian American Film Festival (BAAFF) empowers Asian Americans through film by showcasing Asian American experiences and serving as a resource to filmmakers and the Greater Boston Community. BAAFF is a co-production of Asian American Resource Workshop and ArtsEmerson.

The Roxbury International Film Festival (ROXFILM) is the largest festival in New England celebrating people of color around the world. Over nine days, the festival presents narrative and documentary features, shorts, animation, experimental, and youth films. The festival holds workshops, panel discussions, discussions with filmmakers, and networking opportunities. ROXFILM is a competitive festival.

CineFest Latino Boston LLC is an annual film festival conducted in Boston, highlighting stories by and about Latinos. The festival is committed to using the power of film to break stereotypes, bring cultures and communities together and reveal the complex issues affecting the Latinx community in the United States, as well as communities in Latin America and Spain.
