“It’s queer church at its ecstatic best.”

— The Queer Review

An electrifying collision of performance, live music, and drag spectacle celebrating queer history.

One of the great creative partnerships in contemporary American performance, MacArthur Award-winning icon Taylor Mac reunites with Obie Award-winning composer Matt Ray, ”the musical nexus of New York’s alt-cabaret scene” (NYTimes), for an evening that invites all to reflect on queer lineage and futures.

Following their much-heralded durational performance A 24-Decade History of Popular Music (subject of an HBO original documentary), Mac and Ray created the epic Bark of Millions, that aims to create a new canon of original songs inspired by queer figures past and present.

Electrifying, provocative, and equally touching as it is hilarious, this concert version of Bark of Millions is an open call to community and celebration. In Mac’s own words, if you’re not invited to the party, throw a better one!

“Bark of Millions provides a source for poetic contemplation, a queer terroir out of which new forms of life can grow.” (Vulture, NY Mag)

The Bark of Millions  book is out NOW, published by Black Dog & Leventhal. Order a copy directly from the publisher or purchase a signed copy in the lobby before and after performances of Bark of Millions.

Presented in association with The Huntington.

MATT RAY – Co-Creator / Music / Music Director / Keyboards

Matt Ray is an Obie Award-winning theater-maker, composer, pianist, singer, songwriter, arranger, and music director. His arrangements have been called “wizardly” (Time Out NY) and “ingenious” (NY Times), and his piano playing referred to as “classic, well-oiled swing” (NY Times) and “to cry for” (Ebony). For his work on Taylor Mac’s show A 24-Decade History of Popular Music he and Mac shared the 2017 Kennedy Prize for Drama Inspired By American History. He and Mac’s jazz-based theater piece The Hang opened to rave reviews in January of 2022 and won Matt a 2023 Obie Award for Music Direction and Composition. ARI FOLMAN-COHEN – Bass

An electric and upright bassist, Ari performs in New York City and around the world. Equally at ease in many different musical milieus, Ari tends towards experimental projects as well as many jazz and world music collaborations. His solo project navigates the improvisational and textural world of pedals and looping devices, mixing composition and spur of the moment improvisation into dreamy trance inducing soundscapes or terse disturbing cacophony, all with ear catching melodies and raw emotion.
Ari is an eclectic and open minded musician and his repertoire and stylistic approach fuse the varied experiences he finds himself in. As bass player for Grammy award winning guitarist Stephane Wrembel he holds down exciting and sturdy gypsy jazz bass lines. In avante punk mambo group Gato Loco he thrashes melodically on the electric bass. When playing with his ska and rocksteady project Pangari and The Socialites he supplies the melodic foundations. In addition he has performed with theatre visionary Taylor Mac, piano virtuoso Jean-Michel Pilc, gospel phenoms Harlem Gospel Choir and shared the stage one bizarre new years eve with Jimmy Buffet. In addition to musical pursuits he works on his own film creation, as well as forays into short stories, cartoons and script writing.

“In all its overflowing maximalism, Bark of Millions feels like a spiritual successor to the work that made Mac a superstar.”

— The Guardian

“A supergroup of musical might and sheer magnetism.“

— Vulture

“Aural gorgeousness and visual spectacle”

— The New York Times

“Each outfit is its own solar system, complete with a star, planets and moons. One pair of gloves looks like whole arms dipped in gloopy pink frosting. A pair of false legs, resembling a mesh sack of loofahs, gives the appearance of a court jester. Red roses form an afro. A garment of copper bubbles is scarved in downy feathers.”
