Big Fight in Little Chinatown is a story of community resistance and resilience. Set against the backdrop of the COVID pandemic and an unprecedented rise in anti-Asian racism, the documentary takes us into the lives of residents, businesses and community organizers whose neighborhoods are facing active erasure.

All across the globe, Chinatowns are under threat of disappearing – and along with them, the rich history of a community who fought from the margins for a place to belong. Big Fight in Little Chinatown will document the collective fight to save Chinatowns across North America.

Artists

Karen Cho

Karen Cho has over 15 years’ experience working in the film and television industry as a Producer, Writer & Director of documentary films, TV and web series.

Known for her socially engaged documentaries, Karen has directed award-winning films about everything from the Chinese head tax, to refugees, and women’s rights. Through her television work she has touched on subjects like aviation and ferry pilots, Canadian biographies, car restauration, genealogy, gold mining, the cops in Vancouver’s Downtown East Side, and artist activists around the world.

Lydia Lowe

Lydia Lowe is the Executive Director of the Chinatown Community Land Trust, which works to stabilize Boston Chinatown through community control of land, development without displacement, and collective governance of shared resources. This includes preservation of permanently affordable, resident-controlled housing, planning for a Chinatown historic and cultural district, energy resilience work and open space improvement. She spent three decades doing grassroots organizing and building the Chinese Progressive Association prior to co-founding the Chinatown Community Land Trust with other longtime activists and residents. She also serves on the Chinatown Master Plan Committee, the Greater Boston Community Land Trust Network, Massachusetts’ Environmental Justice Advisory Commission, and the City of Boston’s 250^th anniversary Commemoration Commission.

Angie Liou

Angie Liou has been working in the affordable housing and community development field since 2004. Previously serving as ACDC’s Director of Real Estate, Angie oversaw the asset management of ACDC’s portfolio of 300+ units, and was responsible for developing a pipeline of new projects for ACDC. She has worked as a consultant and project manager in Seattle and Philadelphia assisting nonprofits in providing safe and affordable housing. She has served as the project lead on over $95 million worth of projects. Angie received a Master of City Planning from the University of Pennsylvania with a concentration in Community Development. She received a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology at the University of Pennsylvania.

Using film as a lens to reflect on the vast lived experiences of the Chinese in the Greater Boston Area, this special series will feature monthly films and post-show curated discussions designed to build and foster meaningful community conversation.

The Boston Asian American Film Festival (BAAFF) empowers Asian Americans through film by showcasing Asian American experiences and serving as a resource to filmmakers and the Greater Boston Community. BAAFF is a co-production of Asian American Resource Workshop and ArtsEmerson.

Since 1987 the Asian Community Development Corporation has created vibrant, inclusive communities by building affordable housing and preserving spaces where everyone is welcome to live, work and play. With roots in Boston’s Chinatown neighborhood and a special focus on meeting the needs of low-income Asian American immigrants, ACDC serves individuals and families of all backgrounds throughout the Greater Boston area, including Malden and Quincy. ACDC empowers residents to play an important role in shaping their communities and advocating for their interests, and offers programs to guide them in building wealth and planning for their futures.
