For more than two decades, Mama Yang, a Taiwanese immigrant, has dedicated her life to corresponding with inmates in New York’s prison system. Filmed over ten years, the documentary follows Mama Yang’s extraordinary life journey as she tells the stories of a group of people who encounter each other in a world of loneliness.

Sandy Liang, Educator; Moderator
Sandy Liang served at the State Prison and the Massachusetts Department of Youth Services (DYS) for more than 15 years. Her specialties are in teaching, supporting, and practicing in juvenile justice. DYS participates in various national initiatives that collect and use data to evaluate various aspects of criminal justice system, juvenile justice program.

As an educator teaching at the frontline, Sandy Liang curated her own computer and science lab for various kinds of prisoners, from the Federal death row prisoners to children in prison. She designed all the training curriculums and schedules based on individuals’ needs, taught them computer software, earth science, algebra, and geometry, and she never gave up on any soul.

Jasmine Chinghui Lee, Director

Director Jasmine Chinghui Lee is an award-winning Taiwanese filmmaker since 1996. Director Lee centers on themes of family, migration, gender and elder. Her films are gentle but forceful and derive unique power from her long-term relationships with her film subjects.

Director Lee was the first Taiwanese recipient of the Asian Network of Documentary Fund and was selected as an outstanding Taiwanese director by the Taipei Film Commission.

Her films have been well-received, and have won international awards at prestigious film festivals, including the Busan International Film Festival’s AND Distribution Award, the International Women’s Film Festival in Seoul’s First Prize, the Network of Asian Women’s Film Festival’s NAFF Award, Taiwan Documentary Film Festival’s Audience Choice Award, Taipei Film Festival, Best Individual Achievement etc.

Her signature work is the “Homeland and Womanhood documentary series”. “Money and Honey “, the sixth film of the series, won ten international film festival awards, enjoyed a theatrical release in Taiwan, and was selected by more than 50 international film festivals. In 2015, Taiwan’s Ministry of Culture ranked the film as one of the best in the Taiwanese Film Toolbox program. It was subsequently distributed in more than 100 countries.

ArtsEmerson presents Projecting Connections: Chinese-American Experiences. Using film as a lens to reflect on the vast lived experiences of the Chinese in the Greater Boston Area, this special series will feature monthly films and post-show curated discussions designed to build and foster meaningful community conversation.
