Diamond Diplomacy explores the long and complex relationship between the U.S. and Japan through the shared love of baseball, revealing a moving diplomatic history that spans generations. The film features a cross-cultural lineup of baseball legends, including Babe Ruth, Joe DiMaggio, Shohei Ohtani, and Ichiro Suzuki—newly inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame—and makes a powerful case for sports as a conduit for international healing, connection, and resilience.

Yuriko Gamo Romer, Director

Yuriko Gamo Romer directed and produced the only documentary about Keiko Fukuda (1913-2013), the first woman to attain the tenth degree black belt in judo. MRS JUDO has traveled to more than 25 film festivals internationally and was awarded the Grand Jury Award for Best Documentary at the 2013 International Festival of Sport Films in Moscow. MRS JUDO also broadcast on PBS nationally as part of CAAM’s Japanese American Lives 2014, hosted by Olympic Gold Medalist Kristi Yamaguchi. Currently Romer is mid production on DIAMOND DIPLOMACY which tells a 150-year history connecting the U.S. and Japan through the shared national pastime of baseball and a short film, BASEBALL BEHIND BARBED WIRE about WWII Japanese American internment through the lens of baseball. Additionally, her film OCCIDENTAL ENCOUNTERS won numerous awards, among them a Student Academy Award Gold Medal and Heartland Film Festival’s Jimmy Stewart Memorial Crystal Heart Award. Romer was born in Japan and raised in the United States and is bilingual. She holds a MA in documentary filmmaking from Stanford University. She is a National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences Scholar and an American Association of Japanese University Women Scholar.

Bijan C. Wayne, Cultural curator, writer and narrative historian

Bijan’s work explores U.S. identity through sport, media, and community memory. His writing has appeared inrThe Boston Globe, ESPN’s Andscape, and the Bay State Banner. He is currently developing projects that examine how culture, institutions, and individuals shape — and reflect — one another over time. He is the author of Martha’s Vineyard Basketball: How A Resort League Defined Notions Of Race & Class.

Nate Shu, Community Engagement Manager, ArtsBoston; Co-Programming Manager, Boston Asian American Film Festival (BAAFF); Moderator

As the Co-Programming Manager for the past 5 years, Nate coordinates the selection and programming for the lineup along with managing the 30-person screening committee. At ArtsBoston,Nate helps to run NAACBoston (Network of Arts Administrators of Color Boston) and spearheads their calendar and accessibility initiatives. He is a member of the AAPI Arts and Culture Coalition and a juror on the Elliot Norton Midsize committee, as well as a freelance stand-up comedy performer and producer across the Greater Boston area. He is currently in production on his first documentary short project.

Shared Stories is a spring film series that seeks to build community, shared conversation, and experiences through cinema. This series aspires to create a shared space to find commonality across experiences, and encourage the exchange of stories and ideas. Presented by ArtsEmerson in collaboration with the Boston Asian American Film Festival (BAAFF), CineFest Latino Boston, and the Roxbury International Film Festival (RoxFilm).

The Boston Asian American Film Festival (BAAFF) empowers Asian Americans through film by showcasing Asian American experiences and serving as a resource to filmmakers and the Greater Boston Community. BAAFF is a co-production of Asian American Resource Workshop and ArtsEmerson.

The Roxbury International Film Festival (ROXFILM) is the largest festival in New England celebrating people of color around the world. Over nine days, the festival presents narrative and documentary features, shorts, animation, experimental, and youth films. The festival holds workshops, panel discussions, discussions with filmmakers, and networking opportunities. ROXFILM is a competitive festival.
