Theatre for OneWe Are Here (Nairobi Edition)
Artistic Director Christine Jones and Octopus Theatricals / Kenya
A complete theatrical experience, just for you.
What if you were the only audience member for a theatrical experience? With Theatre for One, you have the chance to do just that!
The vision of New York-based artistic director Christine Jones, Theatre for One: We Are Here (Nairobi Edition) is a virtual theatrical experience that showcases six micro-plays by female writers/performers from Kenya. All of their stories find a way to question the link between ancestry and civilization, the real and the surreal, the inner being, and our external existence. In We Are Here, one performer and one audience member will journey together in search of the answers through these deeply personal works that unfold in an intimate, shared moment.
Here’s how it works:
- The performance is free, but you must reserve your spot. There is a very limited number of audience members we can accommodate.
- For performances on NOV 4, 5, and 6, we’ll make reservations available on TUE, NOV 1 at 12 noon. For performances on NOV 17, 18, 19, and 20, we’ll make reservations available on TUE, NOV 15 at 12 noon.
- Each audience member will be sent a link to enter the virtual lobby where an usher will prepare them for the performance they are about to watch.
- The performer and the audience member will share the space virtual space together, alone.
- Afterwards, all audience members will have the opportunity to talk to each other about the show they just watched in a virtual lobby.
- The performance itself lasts seven to ten minutes. The entire experience is approximately 30 minutes long.
- Note: Due to adult content this show is recommended for audiences 18 years and older. Content of micro-plays range from rating of PG to R, based on language and references to sexual violence and domestic abuse. The specific play to be watched is determined by chance and is generated randomly when joining the show.

“I found myself leaning in to listen more closely, laughing and wincing with realization…’Theatre for One’ breaks down the barrier between performers and audiences and forces showgoers to meaningfully engage with and reflect on the art as its created together.”
— Jacquinn Sinclair, WBUR
“Moments of gently heightened language took me out of, then put me right back into, the action of the play—and made me feel its artifice while being convinced of its deeper reality, all at once.”
— Vinson Cunningham, The New Yorker
“You sit up straight and lean in and listen hard….like tensing a muscle we might not get to fully use again until sometime next year.”
— Helen Shaw, New York Magazine/Vulture.com
“Enhanced by terrific acting, you feel seen in a way that has been too often absent these six months — and maybe longer. Intimacy in the live theater is always touch-and-go. On display alone in our homes, we are much more seen than usual.”
— Jesse Green, The New York Times Critic’s Pick
