Utopian Hotline

Program Book

MAY 01—18

Charles Hayden Planetarium,
Museum of Science, Boston

In an effort to reduce paper waste, we have stopped printing full show programs. Instead, we’ve created a small printed piece with the essentials that all audiences receive which then links to a complete digital program.

Dear Friends of the Museum and ArtsEmerson,

At the Museum of Science, Boston, we believe in the power of wonder to spark meaningful conversations about the world—and universe—we share. At ArtsEmerson, we believe in artistic experiences that are a provocation for conversations about ourselves and our world. This spring, we are thrilled to co-present a groundbreaking experience that brings these complementary missions to life in spectacular fashion: Theater Mitu’s Utopian Hotline.

What happens when a legendary planetarium becomes a stage for human imagination? When real voices, cosmic visuals, and experimental sound collide beneath a dome built for stars? The answer is a theatrical experience that is, quite literally, out of this world and a new kind of storytelling that resonates with our shared humanity and our eternal fascination with the cosmos.

This show is more than a performance—it’s a bold extension of the Museum’s commitment to both the science of space and the art of being human. Through the lens of our Center for Space Sciences, we strive to deepen public understanding of astronomy and exploration. Utopian Hotline embodies this by blending science and story to awaken curiosity about our universe and our place within it.

We at ArtsEmerson are moved by Theater Mitu’s bold vision and inventiveness in imagining an artistic exploration that moves across mediums- from a telephone hotline, to a vinyl record, to a theatrical performance in a traditional theater and now – to a planetarium. In our fast-paced world, Theater Mitu’s invitation to wonder, to imagine, and to dream together, feels revolutionary.

We’re thrilled to bring this piece to life as a partnership between the Museum and ArtsEmerson, as part of our yearlong spotlight on Being Human. As we explore what it means to be human in a complex and rapidly changing world, Utopian Hotline invites each of us to share our voice—literally—and join a collective imagining of a better tomorrow. It’s a celebration of connection, creativity, and possibility.

We invite you to be a part of this extraordinary journey. Call the Utopian Hotline at 646-694-8050 to add your voice to the conversation. In the meantime, we thank you for joining us under the night sky at the Charles Hayden Planetarium for a theatrical experience unlike any other in Boston—or beyond.
Let’s reach for the stars, together.

With wonder,

Museum of Science & ArtsEmerson
