ArtsEmerson joins Ágora Cultural Architects, Just JP, and local artists to celebrate the arrival of playwright and performer Travis Alabanza from the United Kingdom at Welcome to Boston: Burgerz. The evening will include performances by Just JP, Micah Rose, Golden, Lemar Archer and the UnBound Bodies Collective with reception to follow.

Please join us to welcome Travis Alabanza and arts organization Hackney Showroom on April 12 at 7:30pm at CROMA, located at the Arlington Street Church.

Artists

Travis Alabanza
(they/them)

Travis Alabanza is an award-winning theatre maker, writer, and performer. A previous member of the Royal Court Young Writers group and Barbican young poets, Burgerz has toured internationally to Sao Paulo, Southbank Centre, Bristol Old Vic, Smock Alley Dublin, HAU Berlin and Edinburgh Festival Fringe where it won the Total Theatre award. Other work includes My White Best Friend & Living Newspaper (Royal Court online), Skype d8(Bush Theatre online) Overflow (Bush Theatre) and In Tandem (Paines Plough online).

Alabanza has performed their solo work in a range of venues, galleries, and mediums including clubs such as the Royal Vauxhall Tavern, Latitude Festival, the V&A museum and universities and colleges including Oxford, Harvard and Bristol. In 2016/17, Travis was the youngest recipient of the Tate Gallery Workshop residency. Travis has written for Metro, Vice, Gal-Dem, The Independent, Dazed, Gay Times and more.

In 2018/19, Alabanza was listed on the Dazed100 – 100 people defining culture, awarded a Gay Times Honours award for their work in the LGBT+ community, and listed in the Evening Standard 25 Influential people under 25. Recently in The Sunday Times Style Bernadine Evaristo picked Alabanza as a ‘trailblazer of the future’ to watch.

Just JP

From El Salvador via Boston MA, it’s Just JP! They use any pronouns, please mix them up! She appreciates it. They love makeup, performing in brunches, editing videos, fighting oppression and eating pupusas. Just JP was the winner of the first cycle of Worcester Drag Wars in 2018, and since then, they’ve been a staple in the New England drag scene. Just JP us part of the Henry Paquin Presents roster of performers, the associate producer of Full Spin, and the production assistant for Gay Bash’d. Follow them at @dragqueenjp

micah rose
(they/them)

micah rose is growing as a niece to all life, in ode to titas who teach her how to love this world thru our many selves. They share traditions like story circles, yoga, taiko, and more as paths for communal care. Currently in residence at Company One Theatre, they help grow a series of gatherings called We and other queer goddexxes. For Lumad sovereignty in her motherislands, rose organizes with Liyang Network, and weaves an online avatar @micah_pdf on instagram.

Golden
(they/them)

GOLDEN (they/them) is a black gender-nonconforming trans-femme photographer, poet, & community organizer raised in Hampton, VA (Kikotan land), currently residing in Boston, MA (Massachusett people land). They are the author of A Dead Name That Learned How to Live (Game Over Books, 2022) and the photographic self-portraiture series On Learning How to Live, documenting black trans life at the intersections of surviving & living in the United States. Golden’s published & collaborative work can be found on Instagram (@goldenthem_) or through their website goldengoldengolden.com.

bashezo, Kamaria and Stokely of UnBound Bodies Collective

UnBound Bodies (UBB) is a experiemental Queer Trans Black and Latine transdisciplinary creative space|place making and tending collective. We create care-centered spaces as a means to explore and honor Queer Trans Black Indigenous People of Color (QTBIPoC) culture, knowledge sharing, healing, and community building. The tangible products (installations, shows, filmfests, workshops, and suppers) that emerge from our tending practices are meaningful because of the time and energy we devote to exploration, dreaming, research, and care for our communities. All UBB offerings center the narratives and lived experiences of QTBIPoC. We believe this centering practice enables the cultivation of a nourishing and generative creative community. The practice of centering QTBIPoC also resists the real material and embodied violence of white supremacy–enacted through racism, trans/homophobia, ableism, gentrification, and other violences directed against us as QTBIPoC. UBB is committed to Black Queer futurity and we believe we can conjure and manifest the liberatory futures we desire/deserve–through a wide range of creative collaborations that honor our ancestors, elders, communities, and ourselves.

CROMA

CROMA is an open, accessible performance and activities space in the heart of Boston that welcomes all cultures and backgrounds. CROMA is perfect for mid-size gatherings, and it’s a blank canvas to dress up however needed. It has a low stage with backdrops and entrances to “backstage” on each side, projection technology, and access to a fully equipped industrial kitchen that also functions as a bar. The space has its own entrance, through the public alley on Arlington street, behind the main entrance to the Sanctuary.

Welcome to Boston Cast Parties

ArtsEmerson’s visiting artists from around the country and the world are welcomed to Boston with special performances by local poets, vocalists, dancers, actors and entertainers before sharing a sneak peek of their own work.

Rooted in the tradition of visionary arts leader, humanist, Roxbury native, and Emerson college alumna Ms. Elma Lewis, the cast parties are co-hosted by neighborhood organizations around the city.
