House / Divided
The Builders Association / From USA
A multimedia immersive experience, this incisive and insightful examination of the impact of the current mortgage crisis juxtaposes stories prompted by the foreclosures and displacements with passages drawn from Steinbeck’s The Grapes of Wrath.
An incisive and insightful examination of the impact of the current mortgage crisis juxtaposed with passages drawn from John Steinbeck’s The Grapes of Wrath, House/Divided reveals how deeply the foreclosure crisis has affected and undermined our collective sense of American character and identity. In a set constructed from the bones of an actual foreclosed home, The Builders Association interweaves the Joads’ struggles on their way west with stories prompted by the foreclosures and displacements unfolding in our fast-moving, media-saturated era. A highly immersive theatre experience, audience members can access additional material hidden to the naked eye on the stage through their personal technological devices (such as smart phones and tablets). Through digital media and a shifting sense of place, the Builders presents a modern theatrical allegory of finding and losing refuge in a media-saturated, precariously financed global society.
