Secret Son by Laila Lalami (2009)

Moroccan-born writer Laila Lalami has set her debut novel, Secret Son, in the slums of Casablanca where Youssef, the young protagonist, struggles to find his way out and is caught up in a web of family lies and political intrigue. The Los Angeles Times called Lalami’s depiction of Moroccan life “both sensitive and startling.”
