CHECK OUT THESE FILMS, BOOKS AND MUSIC RELATED TO NOT BY BREAD ALONE!
FILMS
Through Deaf Eyes (2007)
This documentary is packed with historical information about the history of Deaf education in the United States and the continuing social and political challenges that the American Deaf community faces. While it is impossible to fully capture over 200 years of experiences in one documentary, this film is a good introduction and springboard into conversations about and awareness of Deaf culture in the United States.
This History Channel special begins with a simple question: how is it that something so simple as flour mixed with water can produce so many tastes and shapes? Every culture has special bread, and this documentary looks at many of them. Examining everything from mainstream Wonder Bread (average American consumers eat 53 pounds of it per year!) to cornbread, tortillas, bagels, and artisan loaves, this film inspires new appreciation for this miraculous food (not to mention those unavoidable cravings).
Helen Keller in Her Story (1954)
In this Academy Award-winning documentary, America’s most famous and significant deaf-blind activist appears in the film version of her autobiography. The film also includes footage of her teacher and companion Annie Sullivan (containing the only known recording of Sullivan’s voice), and her second assistant Polly Thompson. Thanks to this film, we are able to see this extraordinary woman in action, both in her public advocacy and her personal challenges.
Not By Bread Alone will play at the Emerson/Paramount Center Mainstage from Apr 01-06. For more information and tickets, visit our website here.
BOOKS
Bread: A Global History (2011)
Part of William Rubel’s “Edible” series, a collection of books that explore the global and historical significance of specific foods (others in the series include cheese, olives and spices), this book provides a condensed but thorough history of the way humans have made, used and been affected by bread for centuries. This book is an international tour through time and space, explaining how bread evolved from merely food into social markers, a measure of economic expression and cultural symbols. Though not a cookbook, it does include recipes for seven different kinds of historic breads: who could resist the opportunity to make “horse-bread?”
Author Rose Levy Beranbaum has a devout following of bakers who use her recipes exclusively, so her Bread Bible is a great resource for those looking to knead dough for the first time, or for the experienced baker looking for their next loaf challenge. This cookbook includes 150 thorough recipes, and the author goes into great details about the “whys” of ingredients and processes. The recipes run the spectrum from simple “quick” breads to more time-consuming (though not necessarily more difficult) loaves.
Deaf-Blind Reality: Living the Life (2012)
In a collection of interviews with persons with a combination of vision and hearing loss, Scott M. Stoffel (who is deaf-blind himself) provides snapshots of the daily experiences of twelve people living all over the world, from Missouri to New Zealand, and asks them about what they wished the non-deaf-blind understood about their lives. Contributors describe their childhoods, the failed treatments they endured, their educations, and their transitions into adulthood. This book offers an understanding of the misconceptions and the realities of daily live challenges for deaf-blind people.
