Read Mayor Walsh’s Proclamation for “Melinda Lopez Day”

Melinda Lopez Day in the City Of Boston

WHEREAS: Playwright, actor, and educator Melinda Lopez has produced a sizable body of work spanning the last two decades and has garnered a variety of awards; AND

WHEREAS:  Her one-woman play “Mala,” in which she will also perform, will enjoy its World Premiere production at ArtsEmerson’s Paramount Center this month and next; AND

WHEREAS: In March of this year, Lopez was cited by President Obama in his historic speech from Havana, noting newly open communication between Cuba and the United States; AND

WHEREAS: In 2013 she was named the first ever “Playwright in Residence” at Boston’s acclaimed Huntington Theatre Company; AND

WHEREAS: Her play “Sonia Flew” was the inaugural production at the Calderwood Pavilion, the Huntington Theatre Company’s space for new work, at the Boston Center for the Arts; AND

WHEREAS: Her plays and acting have won several area theatre awards, including the Elliot Norton and the Independent Reviewers of New England Award; AND

WHEREAS: She continues to be an inspiration to emerging theatre artists by teaching acting and playwriting at both Boston University and Wellesley College; NOW

THEREFORE: I, Martin J. Walsh, Mayor of the City of Boston, do hereby proclaim October 29th 2016, to be

in the City of Boston

I urge all of my fellow Bostonians to celebrate her enormous contribution to the theatre  field locally and throughout the world.
