Step Afrika! Where Have They Been?
The last time ArtsEmerson welcomed Step Afrika! to our stage, the thrilling dance company was performing in our 2013/2014 season, nearly five years ago. Since then, the company has traveled extensively, touring the world and bringing history to life through dance, music and artistry. Here is brief overview of what this amazing dance company has been up to these past fives years and how extensive their journey has been and continues to be.
The White House
Step Afrika! performed at the White House for the annual Black History Month Reception and met President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama in February 2016. In that same month, Executive Director C. Brian Williams was invited back to the White House to participate in a panel of HBCU (Historically Black Colleges and Universities) as a graduate of Howard University and to represent Step Afrika!
Step Afrika! has traveled far beyond the White House with the success of their Stepping Across Borders program and they’ve been able to share stepping with cultures and people around the globe. In the past five years alone, they have traveled to Slovenia, Israel, Chile, Jordan, and have an upcoming tour in Ghana & Benin.
