Born For This is an absolutely amazing play! You will experience EVERY emotion during this phenomenal production, an absolutely MUST SEE!

I’m beginning to think that anything ArtsEmerson presents is bound to be fantastically wonderful. Go see Born for This if you possibly can. It’s up until July 15. It’s about trying to keep your compass while making it in the world. It’s funny and moving and full of showstopping numbers and a great cast and a live orchestra and amazing costumes and fine sets and perfect staging and pacing and varied choreography. Wildly enthusiastic audience for the 6/19 preview–not even open yet–but it’s already polished enough for Broadway. Phenomenal. PS The woman who plays Tammy Faye Bakker steals the show with six-guns and chutzpah. But great performances by everybody, including the woman who plays Whitney Houston. And the voices! Astounding. I don’t think there was a weak link in the cast. Standing ovation.

And incredible new musical! The show had a fantastic cast and pulled out all types of emotions in me. I laughed, loved and cried.
“Born for This” was very relatable especially if you came from Generation X. I was so captivated and drawn into the musical. What an incredible talented cast and wonderful storyline of BeBe Winans. I learned about a different culture and diversity issues back in the eighties. I also just learned a relationship between Bebe and Cece Winan and Whitney Houston which was a nice treat! This is a definite must-see and I was incredibly honored to be there.

  4. Grace says:

INCREDIBLE! The story of the Winans was riveting and the talent in this production was formidable. After following the struggles and triumphs of this family, I just wanted to sing. Their story helped me to reflect more critically on my Christian faith and the issues of our day. Let me know when Born for This will open on Broadway. — A New Yorker

The play was great, actors, singing, props, stage, seating was well put together. A entertaining time for elders, youth, and anyone in between. A steal of a price and you might want to see it twice it was so uplifting. A must see.

  6. Thank you all for these wonderful comments! Keep spreading the word, please. This is a show that is such an unknown– a sleeper, we call it in the industry– since it’s not from a movie or from an album and it doesn’t have any movie stars in it. But it is blowing people away every single night and I couldn’t be more proud of the way it’s lifting spirits around the city.

A quick story: last night I was on the T on the way home from the show. Two teenagers were working their way through some harmonies on a favorite praise song– inventing an arrangement aloud but to themselves. It was beautiful. They saw me watching and I apologized, told them who I was and they screamed. They were coming from the show and this whole thing of them arranging the song was because of what they’d heard on the stage. I invited them to come with us to the Opening Night and will have a chance to introduce them to BeBe and the actor playing Whitney (who became their new favorite person!) The show gets deep into all of us with this message about love and following your dreams.

I thought that Born For This was an excellent play about real life situations. The cast was amazing, the acting and singing was breath taking. I can’t stop talking about it. The play was real, it had laughter, prejudice, sadness, jealous, everything that real families go through. That’s why I rate this play excellent with 5 stars.

  8. Nadine says:

    Excellent! Excellent! Excellent!
I reccomend everyone to see this performance.

  9. Rainelle White says:

Born For this was an exceptional play we brought the whole family even our 6 year old grandson. My brother had tears in his eyes throughout the play.It also was the first time in a long time that he has been to a play. It was truly amazing and glad that our children got a chance to see how we want to bring them up as Christians and to see that God will bless our obedience. I loved CeCe and her brother BeBe’s performance. the mother and father were right on. The singing was superlative and the ranges of the young man who had the tenor wow. The women who played Tammy Faye all I can say is she studied that women and had me cracking up. Joy, laughter and emotional tears all were present while we watched this performance.

  10. A (literally) religious experience. I laughed, I cried, and I learned so much. I’d recommend this play to anyone who likes musicals, live theatre, or unique storytelling of achievements in the arts by people of color. Bravo.

  11. K Murray says:

L-O-V-E-D it! I knew it would be good (It’s Arts Emerson). It was Amazing! My BFF and I laughed and laughed, during and after the play. The music…Awesome. We are looking forward to the sound track (nudge, nudge). Treat yourself to Born For This!!!

  12. Lynn says:

This show was amazing. Fantastic music, entertaining characters, laugh out loud moments and a beautiful, moving family story line. We highly recommend you see this show!

  13. Wayne Ogden says:

My wife and I loved this musical! “Born for This” tells a great story in a beautiful way. Even though I never wanted to be reminded of The Bakers and their greedy televangelism, their story added depth to the success of the musicals real heroes- The Wayens.

Great music and choreography in a newly refurbished theatre has much to boast about. See this while you can.

    • Paula Elliott says:

I agree with you about being reminded about Bakers, their materialism. But the sister, who played BeBe’s mother, her song “Seventh Son” was an uplifting testament to his mother and family’s love. That was a show stopper that got everyone out of the seats for a “standing O” you didn’t see coming.

  14. Michele says:

Inspired. Joyful. Energetic. Diverse. I did not know what to expect, and I was particularly captivated by the combination of fresh, exceptional voices; humor; and great lyrics. My partner and I were completely engaged through the entire production and were disappointed when it ended to a standing ovation. How do you hold onto such an uplifting feeling? Thank you for the experience. Born For This tops my list for favorite musicals. Boston, you must see this amazing work of creativity.

  20. Kayla says:

The talent in this musical was phenomenal!! Every actor was stellar and they captured the essence of hope, sorrow, struggle, and success that characterized Bebe’s unique story. I enjoyed the laughs, and also enjoyed the sighs. The story had a way of capturing the small moments and pulling on the emotions in those quiet still moments of reflection. It was so good I saw it twice, and wouldn’t mind a third!!!!!! It’s a must see!

  32. Sharon Walcott says:

Amazing!! If I was only allowed one word to describe the show it would be, “Amazing!’ The storyline, character development, voices, acting, music, sets and costumes! And, the costumes were authentic – I remember seeing BeBe perform in at least three of them! Not only was “Born For This” entertaining, it was informative and historical. You never know what goes on “behind the scenes” in someone’s life – this show gives a bird’s eye view of the PTL Club, racism, sibling rivalry, self-absorption and Bebe’s burning quest for fame instead of doing God’s will. In my opinion, Bebe Winan’s raw transparency in writing this musical is what makes it such a success! I thank him so much for sharing!

  33. Marc Stallworth says:

One if the best productions to come into Boston in years. It was the perfect anniversary gift to my wife. Thank You BeBe for the radio interview too!

  37. Donalyn Stephenson says:

Born For This was truly a blessing to witness. I loved the music and the cast was God Sent. I highly reccomend seeing it before it closes.

  38. Joelle Jean-Fontaine says:

Loved the Bakers and the actress who played Whitney Houston truly brought her to Life.

  39. V. Chapman says:

Exceptional play! The cast is AMAZING!

  40. Sahar says:

One of the best musicals to come to Boston!

  41. Amir says:

I still have the song “don’t wait for the applause” still in my head. Love!!!

  42. WA says:

Every cast member was exceptional. I would have liked to have seen a tiny bit less PTL club and a little more Bebe’s life…give me a real understanding of his struggles and mistakes, almost seemed like there is an assumption that we know his story already. For instance, they mention he is broke but don’t show anything leading up to that. Also skipped over was how he became famous, could have used his first hit song, because I don’t know his background.. So to the critics who wanted more depth to the story, I say more Bebe is what might be missing. Still in all, I loved the show and am so very glad I went.

  43. Chifon Reeder says:

It probably was in my top five of all of the musicals I’ve seen. Thank You Mr Springer for the invitation!

  44. Destiny Polk says:

I was dazzled by the costumes and set design, Tammy Fey had me dying of laughter, the audience responses were just as entertaining. And the Whitney moment was like other wordly i really felt like i was watching her.

  45. Keith Ware says:

A perfect gift for our 25th wedding anniversary!! Amazing performance

  46. Rocklyn Clarke says:

Amazing show! Felt like a reunion as we bumped into many old friends. A true blessing for the City of Boston!!

  47. Born For This reignited a flame within me to dream again and was encouraged me to be patient with the process and God as He is truly in control of everything. From a production perspective the set design, casting, costuming, music and lighting was phenomenal. It was a job well done!

  50. Trena says:

Born for this is an amazing show. I went to see it with a group of people and loved it so much I turned around and bought my mother tickets to go see it. She also loved it as well as hr friend. I especially loved the woman who played Tammie Baker, she was absolutely great and hysterically funny. The rest of the cast was just as great. I would see it again when it comes back to Boston.

  51. Anna says:
