The Oscars and ArtsEmerson
Did you know that Stephen Daldry, director of JB Priestley’s Classic Thriller An Inspector Calls, is a four-time Academy Award nominee and a winner of both a Golden Globe and Emmy Award? With the 91st Academy Awards Ceremony taking place this upcoming Sunday evening, we decided to take a look back at ArtsEmerson’s own relationship between the stage and screen as we get ready to welcome this epic mystery to our stage next month!
Denis O’Hare – An Iliad
Denis O’Hare, the solo performer of An Iliad, has made himself a household name in both the theater and film worlds. Before performing at ArtsEmerson in the spring of 2013, he had just wrapped up his role as Russell Edington in HBO’s True Blood. Since performing at the Paramount Center, O’Hare has starred in a number of films and television shows, including five seasons of American Horror Story–which earned him two Emmy Award nominations–The Normal Heart, Dallas Buyers Club, and The Judge. This celebrated actor also held a supporting role in the first season of the hit show This Is Us and will play a recurring character in the highly-anticipated second season of Big Little Lies.

Keith Hamilton Cobb – American Moor
Keith Hamilton Cobb, best known for his roles as the ruthless Tyr Anasazi in the science-fiction series Gene Roddenberry’s Andromeda and as Noah Keefer in All My Children, will be performing at ArtsEmerson with his one-man show American Moor this upcoming April. He is the winner of two Soap Opera Digest Awards for All My Children and was ranked in People Magazine’s “Fifty Most Beautiful People” in 1996. Hamilton Cobb is known for his wide-range of projects and has garnered a reputation as a top Shakespearean actor.

Thaddeus Phillips – 17 Border Crossings and Red-Eye to Havre de Grace
Thaddeus Phillips is a theatre director, stage designer and of actor for both the stage and screen. Phillips first joined us at ArtsEmerson with Red-Eye to Havre de Grace during our 13/14 Season. Before Phillips returned in 2017 with his masterful solo performance of 17 Border Crossings, he appeared on the hit Netlfix show Narcos as CIA Agent Owen.
Cicely Tyson, Vanessa Williams, and Blair Underwood – The Trip to Bountiful
This star-studded cast graced the stage of the Cutler Majestic Theatre in 2014 with their performance of The Trip to Bountiful. Featured in this production was Cicely Tyson, who has appeared in films like The Heart is a Lonely Hunter, Fried Green Tomatoes, Because of Winn-Dixie, Hoodlum, Diary of a Mad Black Woman, Madea’s Family Reunion, The Help and Alex Cross. Tyson is also a three-time Emmy Award winner and received an Academy Award nomination for her performance in Sounder. Vanessa Williams, the eleven-time Grammy nominated artist, also starred in this performance. In addition to selling over 20 million records worldwide, Williams has been in a number of films and television shows like Ugly Betty, Desperate Housewives, 666 Park Avenue, Dance with Me, Shaft, Eraser, and Temptation. Golden Globe nominee Blair Underwood also starred in The Trip to Bountiful. Underwood is best known for The Event, Dirty Sexy Money, The New Adventures of Old Christine, Sex and the City, In Treatment, and L.A. Law.

Martin McDonaugh – The Beauty Queen of Leenane and The Cripple of Inishmaan
This prolific playwright ventured into the world of film in the early 2000s and has directed and written a number of critically-acclaimed movies like In Bruges, Seven Psychopaths, and most recently, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, which was nominated for Best Picture at the 90th Academy Awards last March. McDonaugh’s work has been performed at ArtsEmerson twice, once in our inaugural season with The Cripple of Inishmaan and again during the seventh season with the revival of the award-winning show The Beauty Queen of Leenane.

Isabella Rossellini – Green Porno
Iconic Italian actress joined ArtsEmerson in February 2015 with her hysterical and cheeky performance, Green Porno. In addition to acting on stage, Rossellini had a long career as a model and was the face of the Lancôme cosmetic company for nearly twenty years. As an actress, she starred in films like Blue Velvet and Sailor and Lula, both directed by David Lynch. She has also worked with directors such as Robert Zemeckis in Death Becomes Her, Peter Weir in Fearless and John Schlesinger in The Innocent. Rossellini, who is the daughter of actress Ingrid Bergman and Roberto Rossellini, has also been in Joy, co-starring Jennifer Lawrence, and The Incredibles 2.
Mikhail Baryshnikov – Man in a Case
World-renowned dancer and actor Mikhail Baryshnikov, who is most recognizable for his role as Carrie Bradshaw’s boyfriend in Sex and the City. However, Baryshnikov has also appeared in a number of films, including The Turning Point, which earned him an Academy Award nomination, as well as White Nights, which also starred Isabella Rossellini. Recently, he has appeared in projects like Jack Ryan as well as a campaign for designer Rag & Bone. Mikhail Baryshnikov has started his own production company, Baryshnikov Productions, which brought his celebrated performance of Man in a Case to ArtsEmerson.

Nick Cave and Warren Ellis – Metamorphosis
Although Cave and Ellis were not seen on the stage during the run of Metamorphosis, they were the masterminds behind the brilliant soundtrack of this show. Musical partners Nick Cave and Warren Ellis have contributed to a number of film soundtracks, like The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford, The Road, Lawless, Hell or High Water, and Wind River. Both artists are also well known for their personal and solo projects, each winning a number of influential music and film awards.

John Malkovich – The Infernal Comedy
One of the most celebrated actors of the past few decades made an appearance with ArtsEmerson in September 2011 with The Infernal Comedy. John Malkovich is known for his roles in Places in the Heart and In the Line of Fire, for which he received Academy Award nominations, as well as Empire of the Sun, The Killing Fields, Johnny English, Con Air, Of Mice and Men, Rounders, Ripley’s Game, Being John Malkovich, Shadow of the Vampire, Burn After Reading, Red, Mulholland Falls, Dangerous Liaisons, and Warm Bodies. Most recently, he appeared in the Netflix hit Bird Box and has produced films such as Ghost World, Juno, and The Perks of Being a Wallflower.

F. Murray Abraham – Merchant of Venice
Oscar-winner F. Murarry Abraham starred in The Merchant of Venice during ArtsEmerson’s first season–a production that was met with wide praise. Abraham has a long history in film, appearing in films like All the President’s Men. Scarface The Name of the Rose, Last Action Hero, Star Trek: Insurrection Finding Forrester, Inside Llewyn Davis, and The Grand Budapest Hotel, in addition to Amadeus which earned him an Academy Award in 1984. Abraham is also known for his television work and is a regular cast member on the television series Homeland, which earned him two Primetime Emmy Award nominations.
