History of the One-Person Show
This season’s first show, Kristina Wong, #FoodBankInfluencer, might be history’s only solo karaoke musical about emergency food, but the concept of a one-person performance has been around for quite a long time. Solo performances began with dramatic readings of poetry and prose in the late 17th century before naturally expanding into full-fledged performances, with notable writers like Samuel Foote enthralling audiences throughout the 18th century.
Many of you are likely familiar with Charles Dickens. What you might not know, however, is that he loved to perform his stories using what’s called a prompt copy of an original text. He would cut, paste, and rearrange sentences, adding stage directions and eventually creating a performance script. Before Dickens, no writer had ever performed their works for the public.
With this, Dickens laid the groundwork for the “one-man show,” as some might call it. Dickens’ stage consisted of a desk, a rug, a chair, and gas lights. He’d perform for crowds of up to 2,000 people, acting out every character for up to three hours straight.

You might be wondering, why go solo? Especially today, when artists have limitless possibilities thanks to technology, and an abundance of accessible talent. It’s because one-person performances have their own advantages. First and foremost, they give the playwright and performer full creative control over the project. Even just a cast of two interrupts full creative control. Also, these shows are often cost effective, with only one person requiring transportation, costumes, a mic, and more.
On the personal side of things, it’s a marker of growth for one-person performers to successfully stage their performances. It’s certainly different being the only actor on stage instead of having a fellow actor to help you play roles, keep energy high and keep the crowd engaged. Many people consider one-person shows to be a genuine feat of acting, writing, and production artistry all at once!
Now that you understand the intricacies of one-person performing, you’re sure to love Kristina Wong, #FoodBankInfluencer, even more. Wong accomplishes perfect comedic timing, killer karaoke, and cultural commentary all at once. You’ll laugh as much as you’ll learn something new. Get your tickets now!
