Don’t Miss the 8th Annual Boston Baltic Film Festival!

It’s that time of year again! Join ArtsEmerson and The Baltic Film Committee for the 8th annual Boston Baltic Film Festival at the Emerson Paramount Center from February 27-March 1.

This year’s festival will showcase award-winning feature films and documentaries from Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania and even includes a special Meet the Filmmakers Panel on Friday February 27! If you can’t attend in person, there will be a chance to catch this world-class films during a virtual screening week from March 2-23.

Friday, February 27

Fränk (Estonia) @ 6:30pm

As a result of another fight with his abusive father, a young boy runs away to stay with an uncle in an unfamiliar town, where he finds companions in a local troublesome gang as well as in an odd disabled man named Fränk.

There is a Q&A with the filmmaker following this screening as well as an Opening Night Reception at 9pm.

Saturday, February 28

To Be Continued. Teenhood (Latvia) @ 10am

This documentary features a group of 5 children who were first filmed in 2015 during their first year of school. Now, seven years later, the filmmakers have returned to film the children, who are now 14, to see how their lives have changed over the last few years.

There is a Q&A with the filmmaker following this screening.

Rolling Papers (Estonia) @ 12:45pm

Sebastian leads a monotonous life as a store clerk until one day, his ordinary life is shaken up when he is introduced to Silo, a free-spirited wander. Together, the two navigate life and search for a purpose, even dreaming up possibilities, like getting a one-way ticket to Brazil.

Flesh, Blood, Even a Heart (Latvia) @ 3:30pm

This gentle, feel-good coming-of-age dramedy follows Liv, a passionate woman struggling with body insecurities, longing for her old-fashioned husband to find her irresistible. Everything changes when Liv receives a sudden call: her estranged father is in a coma and undergoing intensive therapy in the hospital, a place where after every visit, Liz gets list in the maze-like corridors.

There is a reception following this screening.

Renovation (Lithuania) @ 6:30pm

Ilona, a perfectionist 29-year-old, lives in present-day Vilnius, Lithuania. At this turning point in her life, she begins to question how she truly wants to live – moving into a seemingly perfect apartment with her boyfriend.  However, when the building’s renovation begins, Ilona’s inner doubts also start to surface. Renovation’s director Gabrielė Urbonaitė earned her BFA in Film from Emerson College.

Sunday, March 1

Tasty (Lithuania) @ 10am

An enthusiastic village girl and a modest single mother are passionate cooks stuck in the Kaunas canteen “Gardutė.” One day, the girl includes them in a culinary reality show, the main prize of which is her own restaurant, however, the little girl has lied about their background and claims that they are both qualified chefs from the La Gardutė restaurant.

Borderline (Lithuania) @ 1pm

Vilius, a grieving ornithologist and single father to an autistic daughter, gets entangled in a smuggling operation near the Lithuanian border to escape debt. He uses his bird-watching equipment and knowledge of the border region to smuggle contraband, forcing him to confront his own morality and reconnect with his daughter amidst the bleak landscape and criminal underworld.

Aurora (Estonia) @ 3:40pm

The daughter of a religious leader enters into a secret extramarital affair, which collapses her life arrangements. Years later, at a family wedding anniversary celebration, he receives a message that rips open old wounds.

Red Code Blue (Latvia) @ 6:40pm

Young police detective Roman Skulte starts working in the Riga Precinct in the mid-90s. He is full of juice, ready to take on crime, but he soon confronts a harsh truth: to fight crime, he must break the rules.

There is a Q&A with the filmmaker following this screening as well as a Closing Night Reception at 9:30pm.

Tickets for all screenings $16.50 with the choice to add-on panel admission – student discounts are available! If you see 5+ films you also have the chance to save! Select 5 films and get all tickets for $12 each – $60 total – or see all 9 films for $99 – that’s $11 each. Add the panel to either set for only $5. Tickets are available for purchase online, over the phone, or in person at the Box Office.
