What Did You Think of Machine de Cirque?
We are so glad that you joined us at the Paramount Theatre for the wild ride that is Machine de Cirque! Please take some time to share you thoughts in the comments.
There’s something particularly magical about a performance without dialogue. It allows for audiences to gather regardless of language barrier and find their own interpretation of stories told through movement.
What did you take away from the performance? Was there a particular act that you’re still thinking about?

It was an evening of curious mystery, followed by a revelation of daring and fun. It was great!
Fantastic show. Fun and exciting for all ages. No margin for error and the guys excelled. Go see Machine De Cirque!!!
It was the wonderment of childhood again — I forgot that I was turning 67 today!

Donkey Kong meets Buster Keaton! Pure joy!
What an amazing group of highly talented performers. The guys ran straight out for 90 minutes performing the most entertaining and athletic feat’s of gymnastic. The music was perfect and when I wasn’t laughing silly I was holding my breath lest they fall. Great job. Bring these guys back again very soon.
While these men are clearly very skilled, I felt some of the “acting business” came off rather misogynistic. First that poor young woman who was pulled on stage should have been able to leave the date scenario much sooner but was physically held on stage until she agreed to kiss him. I was so proud of her when she held her ground. Second the three performers who were not on the unicycle were rather rudely mocking women or at least what they considered to be feminine behavior. It was in poor taste and not even necessary to the show.
I agree. Pulling a woman onstage for such a long time and then coercing her into a kiss is so, so wrong. That, followed by the next act that was clearly mocking a certain type of woman (fangirl?), completely ruined the show for me.
YES. Thank you! I wanted to love the show but I walked away feeling so uncomfortable because of these really unnecessary, sexist, creepy moments. The woman brought on stage was clearly not consenting to anything they were asking her to do, and it made me cringe to hear the audience encouraging her to kiss the man and straddle another. The only reason I feel the inappropriate nature of it wasn’t obvious to most people is because the men happened to be attractive and talented actors, and then when they do the scene with the towels you feel inclined to like them because they’re putting themselves out there and appear charming. Importance difference is they were subjecting themselves to being objectified, rather than making a woman engage in something she doesn’t want to. I liked the rest of the show but left feeling so uneasy and I viewed this blog to see if anyone else felt this way– I’m so glad I wasn’t the only one.
I agree with both of these critiques. The unicycle routine did not need to be gendered at all. And in the case of the date scenario: consent is a thing. If Emerson is serious about having a supporting community they should encourage performers they bring here to behave in a manner that does not actively work against that message.
The routine with the towels was absolutely wonderful. The acrobatic acts were all fantastic, but the towel routine was completely novel and channeled Charlie Chaplin and Buster Keaton.
I brought my two boys who are not impressed with much and we all were at times on the edge of our seat and at other times roaring with laughter.
It was quite a trip!
It was a very fun night from beginning to end! Such an amazing amount of talent ! When a small group can capitvate for almost 90 minutes straight on it should be applauded! The standing ovation from the crowd verified everyone’s opinion last night!
Brilliant. Creative. Entertaining. One kept waiting to see what was coming next. I truly enjoyed the perfomance of these very talented artists.
