What did you think of TROJAN WOMEN?
What did you think of SITI Company’s adaptation of Euripides’ classic play? Were you moved by the moments of individual choice that would define the rest of these characters’ lives? A fantastic production and great performances.
Yes, Trojan Women was intense. I almost wished Hecuba would consume herself in the flames and avoid becoming a slave. I’ll have to reread the history books. I’m not sure how the actress preserves her sanity, in between shows. Quite an amazing feat.

I would have found it helpful to have the actors join the audience afterwards. (Perhaps you do(did) have that for specific performances.)
Sorry you missed the cast last night! They came out after awhile to the Randall lobby. They need to get out of costume, but they will be joining the audience in the lobby after the show as they are able to. There will be a post-performance discussion with them after the show on Friday night, too.
I have not read Euripides since college, which was longer ago than I care to remember. I am most familiar with this play in the movie version with Katherine Hepburn as Hecuba. I had thought Ms. Hepburn had said it all. I was wrong. Ms. Lauren’s performance was haunting and the rest of the splendid cast right with her. I will have dreams about this. I don’t know what liberties they took with the original text and I don’t much care. The effect was stunning. If this is representative of SITI’s work, I hope you will make them regulars in your season. A great playwright doesn’t hurt, but plays should be seen and not read and the actors make all the difference. May your houses will be packed.

This Saturday evening’s performance was stunning. Every actor was a unique and intensely personal contributor. I will never forget this performance, thank you Siti Company for your love of work.
This may be coming out of left field, but the production reminded me of the final image in “Zero Dark Thirty” — Jessica Chastain sitting alone on that plane, crying — her response, it seemed to me, to the absolute futility of what had just occurred and what will continue. CITI’s brilliant production was, at many times, viscerally painful to watch. But the play’s final image — Hecuba and the Chorus stepping off — could almost be read as an effort to transcend that futility to say “you don’t have me quite yet!”

It was a very powerful and gripping performance. Some of the characters were absolutely outstanding.
