Let’s Talk About American Moor

Thank you for joining us for joining us for American Moor by Keith Hamilton Cobb! We are so proud to be able to bring this show back to Boston.

There is so much to unpack in this play and we would love to hear some of what’s on your mind. If you’re looking for some inspiration for conversation, check out this conversation with Keith and our executive director David Howse, moderated by Lizzy Cooper Davis, PhD.

CRITICAL PRAISE

“He is funny, provocative, and touching. If this were only a work about one man’s journey of discovering Shakespeare it would be outstanding. However, there is much more to Mr. Cobb’s story.” – Boxing Over Broadway

“The play brilliantly interweaves various clashing points of view…[Cobb brings] his A-game to this performance: viscerally, intellectually, and emotionally. The result is a compelling meta-meditation, political and philosophical, that leaves lasting impressions — while also provoking unsettling questions.” – The Arts Fuse

“Profoundly gorgeous…a stunningly nuanced and knotty yarn, one both deeply rooted in the Black experience, and yet expressly aimed for a wider audience.” -Michael Hoban, The Theater Mirror

“”An unbelievable production…I was mesmerized.” – Amanda McGowan, Boston Public Radio

“Extremely funny…wrenching…really powerful…incredibly visceral and personal.” – Jared Bowen, WGBH Arts Editor

“A phenomenal piece of work. It speaks to the struggle of African American men through out the history of the United States. It’s a MUST SEE.” – Audience Member

“American Moor at ArtsEmerson is riveting. It is beautifully written and artfully realized. Keith Hamilton Cobb has written a love letter to Shakespeare and to the stage. But more than that, he presents a demand for authenticity and deep listening that resonates far beyond the stage. It is easy to admire the craft with which he presents that demand and to hope it applies to someone else, because the response required is not easy. Very little worth doing ever is.” – Audience Survey

“American Moor was one of the most exceptional evenings of theater I have experienced.” – Audience Survey

“My friend and I just returned from seeing American Moor. It was stunning. We had front row seats and felt the full blast of this scorching, and moving dissection of what itself means to be a black man who must always wear a mask to help whites manage their fear of him – his equality, and pain of his existence. It was a brilliant tour de force performance and I identified with his experience as a black woman. It’s an amazing play and the dialogue exquisite. My friend felt it was a little too long, but I was riveted by the naked truths he spoke so unflinchingly. I would not recommend taking young children, because the dialogue is blunt and liberally peppered with profanity; juxtaposed with the socially acceptable version – the mask he must wear. It ends with his challenge, hope, wish to be seen and to act informed by the full range of his experience as a black man in America. Im not a theater critic so forgive my clumsy description, but go see it for yourself.” – Julia F. Trip, Facebook

“Cobb was brilliant and an amazing script.” – Debra Weisberg

“Go see it! Brilliant and chilling.” – Nandini Talwar

“Great show, and funnier than I thought it would be. Also heartbreaking but the humor made it even more powerful and relatable.” Susan Cassidy
