“My friend and I just returned from seeing American Moor. It was stunning. We had front row seats and felt the full blast of this scorching, and moving dissection of what itself means to be a black man who must always wear a mask to help whites manage their fear of him – his equality, and pain of his existence. It was a brilliant tour de force performance and I identified with his experience as a black woman. It’s an amazing play and the dialogue exquisite. My friend felt it was a little too long, but I was riveted by the naked truths he spoke so unflinchingly. I would not recommend taking young children, because the dialogue is blunt and liberally peppered with profanity; juxtaposed with the socially acceptable version – the mask he must wear. It ends with his challenge, hope, wish to be seen and to act informed by the full range of his experience as a black man in America.
