The Asian American Pacific Heritage Film Showcase

See You Yesterday arrives in Boston May 16th and we are thrilled to welcome these Cambodian artists to our stage. In anticipation of their performance, we’ve curated several film engagements as opportunities to deepen the audience connection to See You Yesterday. These films are reflections on themes within the show, the behind the scenes look at the creation of See You Yesterday, and a celebration of Asian American Pacific Heritage Month.

On Monday, May 13, there will be a dual screening of See You Yesterday: Behind the Scenes, here at the Bright Family Screening Room in the Paramount Center and in Lowell at Middlesex Community College. Follow the multi-year development process of See You Yesterday and the journey the performers and their community took to arrive in Boston. This is a free engagement with RSVP.

The series will continue on May 17 with a screening of Surviving Bokator. Filmed over five years, this incredible journey of healing follows an older genocide survivor as they look to rebuild Cambodia through the Bokator, a martial art form lost during the Khmer Rouge. A story of triumph, heartbreak and coming of age in a Cambodia on the rise, presented at the Bright Family Screening Room. This screening will be followed by a Q&A with the film’s director, producer and co-protagonist Tharoth Sam. Tharoth will also demonstrate a live Bokator performance.  

On May 18, we will continue our programming with a screening of Canton Army in the High Sierras to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the completion of the Transcontinental Railroad. Later in the day, there will be two presentations from the Boston Asian American Film Festival. The first, a series of short documentaries, traveling from Washington DC to Oakland to China, community is created by the shared experiences one identifies with. These documentaries provide a lens into new and familiar spaces. To conclude the showcase, BAAF is presenting a series of short narrative films, exploring stories of families, histories, and cultures that shapes the way we perceive ourselves and the world. All of these films will be screened in the Bright Family Screening Room.
