The Shakers were some of the very first conscientious objectors in the United States. During the fall of 1862, two Shaker brothers, Benjamin Gates and Frederick W. Evans, traveled to Washington, D.C. to meet with Abraham Lincoln where they successfully made their case and secured the status of conscientious objectors for all Shakers.

The Shakers became highly successful entrepreneurs, selling their herbs, seeds and many prepared foods, such as canned fruits and vegetables. At the end of one growing season in the mid-1800s, the Shaker community in Pleasant Hill, KY canned and sold more than 3,000 jars of peaches to the outside world.
