Announcing Our 2018/19 Season!

May has been an incredibly exciting month for us at ArtsEmerson. Just last week we welcomed StepAfrika! back to our stages for their exhilarating show, The Migration: Reflections on Jacob Lawrence, we saw Mr. Joy embark on its second neighborhood tour, and we have been eagerly preparing for the arrivals of Cold Blood and I Dream: Boston, both happening at the end of this month.

We are also incredibly excited to announce our 2018/2019 Season. We unveiled all eleven productions last Monday, May 7th at the Emerson Paramount Center in front of a live audience!

Artistic Director David Dower, Executive Director David Howse, and ASL interpreters Christopher Robinson and Rachel Judelson

Hundreds of ArtsEmerson fans filed in to the theater on Monday night to watch executive director David Howse and artistic director David Dower share with the audience the productions coming next season–everything from a Russian adaptation of the Shakespearean play Measure for Measure to Manual Cinema’s triumphant return with The End of TV to the National Theatre’s Landmark Production of An Inspector Calls. Each show announced was greeted with an eruption of cheers, gasps and excited whispers.

The 2018/2019 Season Announcement was unique in the fact not only were audiences able to get a sneak peek at the upcoming shows through videos and still photos, but they were also able to see some live performances and listen to interviews with the artists. Keith Hamilton Cobb, the writer and performer of American Moor, wowed the crowd with an eight-minute monologue from his award-winning show. This brief performance concluded with an interview with Cobb, who talked about his own history with performing Shakespeare, telling the audience how excited he was to bring American Moor back to Boston.

Next up, Raphaëlle Boitel, the creator of When Angels Fall spoke to the audience about her piece, which is making its U.S. premiere at ArtsEmerson in February. Boitel talked about the themes of her show and explained to the audience that she derives inspiration from artists like Pina Bausch, Charlie Chaplin and David Lynch. Fun fact: she includes her mother in almost every single show she creates!

Although this event was primarily focused on the upcoming season, audiences witnessed a special performance by BeBe Winans, the creator and inspiration behind the new musical Born For This, opening at the Emerson Cutler Majestic Theater this June. Winans sang the title track of this musical, which brought audiences to tears and ended in a standing ovation. During a post-performance interview, the ever-charming Winans talked about his journey with creating the musical and his experiences with casting the show and interacting with different audience members–all stories that resulted in applause and laughter.
